blog along to the next writer. For the 2026-2027 school year, Cadence Rochlen (writing here!) will be stepping into the role, but for the past nine months, Nylah Winchester has been behind the wheel, carefully crafting the stories that fill these digital pages.<\/p>\n<p>When initially recommended for the position by <a href=\"https:\/\/sou.edu\/academics\/farewell-annalynn-hello-nylah\/\">Annalynn Mueller<\/a> last year, Nylah was uncertain if the role was within her skill set, but now speaks of the \u201coverwhelming support\u201d she&#8217;s received from the  91视频 community. Within the English department, she notes each professor\u2019s deep dedication to student success, particularly highlighting the mentorship of Dr. Alma Rosa Alvarez: \u201cOftentimes, especially as a Black woman, we are made to feel like we don\u2019t belong in certain spaces or that it is just hard to attain our dreams. Alma really pushed me to take up every space I enter, and I thank her for that, because it has made me much more confident and sure of myself.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><br \/>\n\n<style type=\"text\/css\" data-created_by=\"avia_inline_auto\" id=\"style-css-av-mqqucy1c-1bb889edb033a71c596201fe436d29f7\">\n#top .av_textblock_section.av-mqqucy1c-1bb889edb033a71c596201fe436d29f7 .avia_textblock{\nfont-size:26px;\n}\n<\/style>\n<section  class='av_textblock_section av-mqqucy1c-1bb889edb033a71c596201fe436d29f7 '   itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock rising-quote av_inherit_color'  itemprop=\"text\" ><blockquote>\n<p class=\"dig-4\" style=\"text-align: left\"><em>&#8220;The English Program professors recognized something in me that <span class=\"amaze-ultra madrone\">I did not see in myself at the time.&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"pop-8\" style=\"font-size: 0.6em;text-align: right\">\u2013 Nylah Winchester<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div><\/section><br \/>\n\n<style type=\"text\/css\" data-created_by=\"avia_inline_auto\" id=\"style-css-av-mqqufkhd-4aff6f0607ee1885812ae2352a463e64\">\n#top .av_textblock_section.av-mqqufkhd-4aff6f0607ee1885812ae2352a463e64 .avia_textblock{\nfont-size:15px;\n}\n<\/style>\n<section  class='av_textblock_section av-mqqufkhd-4aff6f0607ee1885812ae2352a463e64 '   itemscope=\"itemscope\" itemtype=\"https:\/\/schema.org\/BlogPosting\" itemprop=\"blogPost\" ><div class='avia_textblock'  itemprop=\"text\" ><p>While this support helped her over the year, she noted how the time management of the position was a challenge, but with the decompressing power of a comfort meal and an episode of the TV show <em>Interview With the Vampire<\/em>, the workload felt more possible. After settling into the task, Nylah started the process of writing a story by getting to know her subject. She peruses interviewee\u2019s CVs and current projects that they have shared, developing an understanding of the narrative she hopes to convey in her work. After this cursory research, she prepares her interview questions to help her expand the story she&#8217;s discovered through this preparation.<\/p>\n<p>When asked about her proudest blog work of the year, Nylah points to the recent <a href=\"https:\/\/sou.edu\/academics\/exploring-body-horror-post-colonialism-and-neurodiversity-through-capstone-research\/\"><br \/>\ncapstone profiles<\/a>, expressing how impressed she is by the work of her English program peers: \u201cMy friends are doing some really interesting work on body horror, disability, and postcolonialism.\u201d She thanks her fellow students, Rowan, Autumn, and Rose for taking the time out of their busy schedules to help her highlight their work. In addition, Nylah\u2019s article on <a href=\"https:\/\/sou.edu\/academics\/baldwin-totally-blew-my-mind-kendall-dinniene-on-sou-graduate-study-and-teaching-literature\/\">Kendall Dinniene<\/a> sticks out fondly in her memory. Whereas most of her interviews are conducted asynchronously due to busy schedules and conflicts between time zones, she had the opportunity to speak with Kendall over Zoom, which she described as \u201ca real treat!\u201d She enjoyed their discussion on Fat Studies, and was able to be more flexible in her questions with the live format.<\/p>\n<p>But her work this year goes well beyond the blog. As a McNair Scholar, Nylah has had the opportunity to present her research publicly, both at  91视频\u2019s creativity conference and at UCLA\u2019s National McNair Conference. In addition, Nylah shares she has \u201cdiscovered who [she is] as a writer here.\u201d She recently became a published poet, her work appearing in  91视频\u2019s <em>Main Squeeze<\/em> literary magazine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have always loved poetry,\u201d Nylah says. Her time here has given her the opportunity to experiment with form and voice, both on the page, and on the stage at this winter term\u2019s <em>Bodylogues<\/em> event. Before the event, Nylah had the opportunity to practice readings in Dr. Merrilyn Lundhal\u2019s class- \u201cshe\u2019s cool like that.\u201d The readings made an impression, with multiple people thanking her for sharing her work afterwards. Her coursework with creative writing professor, Dr. Kasey Mohammad, also supported her growth as a poet. Alma, Merrilyne, Diana, and Margaret are all dedicated to making sure their students succeed\u201d and to the community as a whole: \u201cI had a feeling I\u2019d find what I needed here, and I did.\u201d After graduation, she plans to take a gap year, focusing on her poetry, writing her lesbian vampire novel (which I for one hope to read someday soon!), and thrifting (one of her greatest passions in life, as anyone who\u2019s met her can see by her beautifully curated style!). She then plans to return to academia to pursue a Ph.D. in English or Literature. While her presence will certainly be missed around campus, I\u2019m certain many among us can\u2019t wait to see all the wonderful things she is off to do. I am so excited to pass the quill to Cadence, who is \u201clooking forward to publicly sharing [her] writing\u201d with you all. Cadence is a transfer student, so she feels that she is \u201cstill learning about the work at [ 91视频].\u201d She believes the blog will help her explore and connect with people who help the English program thrive. Additionally, as  91视频 undergoes dramatic structural shifts, Cadence wants to \u201chighlight the value and significance of the English department, by shining a light on the importance of preserving this space.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When Cadence is not working or in class, she spends her \u201cvery limited free time\u201d reading: \u201cI\u2019ll read just about any genre, but tend to gravitate towards a lot of sci-fi and fantasy. My favorites are <em>The Murderbot Diaries<\/em> series, <em>The Locked Tomb<\/em> series, and <em>The Spear Cuts Through Water<\/em>.\u201d Outside of reading, Cadence enjoys cross-stitch, knitting, and traveling.<\/p>\n<p>Writing for the blog has been so much fun and equally challenging, so I am grateful for the experience. While I am sad to go, I know Cadence will do wonderfully in this role.
