Being an Honors Scholar Athlete. The Best Decision I鈥檝e Ever Made.

Keeley Wright鈥檚 enthusiasm is palpable.
鈥淗i! My name is Keeley Wright and I am a sophomore in the Honors College at 91视频. I am also on the women鈥檚 basketball team, and I love every second of being an Honors scholar athlete here. It鈥檚 the best decision I鈥檝e ever made.鈥
Growing up in a family of athletes, Keeley chose basketball because of its high pace. 鈥淚鈥檝e tried softball and other sports where you鈥檙e just kinda waiting a lot of the time. I love the constant movement of basketball, the back and forth. If you work hard, it鈥檚 a sport where you can see your progress every day.鈥
That progress catapulted Keeley and her teammates to the 2025 NAIA Basketball National Championships in Sioux City, Iowa this March.
鈥淥ur team had gone 34-1 this past basketball season, with our only loss coming in the Elite 8 game at the National Championships. It was a bittersweet ending to this unforgettable season, as no team in 91视频 history has ever had this insane record.鈥

What accounts for the team鈥檚 success? 鈥淥ur team鈥檚 culture, our teamwork, our commitment to each other, our friendships,鈥 Keeley says. 鈥淣o amount of training can take the place of these core elements.鈥
What does it take to balance being a scholar and an athlete?
鈥淚t starts with lots of dedication to school. I put my academics first, I try to do all my homework while we鈥檙e on trips to games. I want to get better at both school and basketball. And the HC is very supportive of student athletes. They help us in many ways, whether that be reaching out to tell us how proud they are of us, or when we鈥檙e in a crunch, telling us not to worry about a deadline, to get it done when we can.鈥
What was it like to stand in the arena at the National Championships this March?
鈥淚 was nervous, to say the least. Getting to that big stage as a sophomore was definitely an experience for the books. We鈥檒l never know if it will happen again. I took in every second.鈥
This summer Keeley will work as a Certified Nursing Assistant to get the hours she needs to become a Physician鈥檚 Assistant.
